The Seven Gifts to Mary
INTRODUCTION: Last Sunday I taught on the Magi, who went shopping two years before Christmas. Today I want to teach on the seven gifts given to Mary.
Luke 1:26-38(NKJV) – 26Now in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, 27to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. 28And having come in, the angel said to her, “Rejoice, highly favored one, the Lord is with you; blessed are you among women!” 29But when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and considered what manner of greeting this was.
30Then the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. 31And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bring forth a Son, and shall call His name Jesus. 32He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Highest; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David. 33And He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of His kingdom there will be no end.” 34Then Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, since I do not know a man?” 35And the angel answered and said to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Highest will overshadow you; therefore, also, that Holy One who is to be born will be called the Son of God.
36Now indeed, Elizabeth your relative has also conceived a son in her old age; and this is now the sixth month for her who was called barren. 37For with God nothing will be impossible.” 38Then Mary said, “Behold the maidservant of the Lord! Let it be to me according to your word.” And the angel departed from her.
Some say the process of gift giving started in Europe, others say it went back to the Magi. I believe it started with God’s seven gifts He gave to Mary. Let’s unwrap them!
I. She Will Become Pregnant
1. How a woman “became with child” was known by everyone; they lived in a farming family.
2. She was going to be with child outside of the normal way of conception; verse 34 – 34Then Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, since I do not know a man?”
3. 700BC
Isaiah 7:13-14(NKJV) – 13Then he said, “Hear now, O house of David! Is it a small thing for you to weary men, but will you weary my God also? 14Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel.
II. She Will Give Birth to a Son
1. The pregnancy will be normal.
2. He was to be a baby boy.
Hebrews 2:17-18(NKJV) – 17Therefore, in all things He had to be made like His brethren, that He might be a merciful and faithful High Priest in things pertaining to God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people. 18For in that He Himself has suffered, being tempted, He is able to aid those who are tempted.
III. His Name Will Be Jesus (Jehovah-Salvation)
Sometimes named by a mother, Jesus was named by His Father.
This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptance, that Christ Jesus came
into the world to save sinners, of whom I am chief.
IV. His Name Will Be Great
1. Great in His Love
2. Great in His Compassion
3. Great in His Sacrifice
4. Great in His Stories
5. Great in His Power
6. Great in His Commission
7. Great in His Second Coming
V. He Will Be The Son of The Most High God
Matthew 3:16-17(NKJV) – 16When He had been baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened to Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting upon Him. 17And suddenly a voice came from heaven, saying, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”
VI. His Kingdom Will Never End
2 Samuel 7:12-16(NKJV) – 12”When your days are fulfilled and you rest with your fathers, I will set up your seed after you, who will come from your body, and I will establish his kingdom. 13He shall build a house for My name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. 14I will be his Father, and he shall be My son. If he commits iniquity, I will chasten him with the rod of men and with the blows of the sons of men. 15But My mercy shall not depart from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I removed from before you. 16And your house and your kingdom shall be established forever before you. Your throne shall be established forever.”‘“
VII. He Will Be the Holy One of God
Luke 1:35(NKJV) – 35And the angel answered and said to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Highest will overshadow you; therefore, also, that Holy One who is to be born will be called the Son of God.
“Overshadow” Shekinah
Exodus 40:34-36(NKJV) – 34Then the cloud covered the tabernacle of meeting, and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle. 35And Moses was not able to enter the tabernacle of meeting, because the cloud rested above it, and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle. 36Whenever the cloud was taken up from above the tabernacle, the children of Israel would go onward in all their journeys.
1. Man - to be born
2. Sinless - The Holy One
3. God - The Son of God

1Timothy1:15(NKJV)– 15
Conclusion: Mary’s gifts to God
Luke 1:38(NKJV) – 38Then Mary said, “Behold the maidservant of the Lord! Let it be to me according to your word.” And the angel departed from her.
1. Voluntary servant hood
2. Radical Commitment
That’s it! That’s what God wants from us – voluntary servant hood (make Him Lord) and a radical commitment.
